Council Tax
General Information
Council Tax is the way in which people in
England make contributions towards the cost of local authority
services. The Economic Regeneration (Revenues) section is involved
in the billing and collection of Council Tax for Melton Borough
Council and on behalf of Leicestershire County Council,
Leicestershire Police Authority and the Parish Council in your
area. The Listing Officer at the Valuation Office Agency (a part of
the Inland Revenue) gives each property a band from A to H.
Each March, Melton Borough Council sends out
a Council Tax bill for the new financial year based on the amount
needed to provide local services for Melton Borough Council,
Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Police Authority and
your parish. This bill may be reduced by the award of: council tax
benefit; a discount or an exemption. If payments are not
received in accordance with the payment documents issued with the
bill, then the recovery procedure is started. This may cause extra
costs being added to any outstanding Council Tax. If your
circumstances change that may cause the council tax to be altered,
such as a change of address, then Customer Services should be
notified immediately.
The legislation that covers the billing and
collection of council tax is: The Local Government Finance Act 1992
Council Tax (Administration and Enforcement) Regulations 1992.
