What can we do about Anti-Social Behaviour?
Melton Borough Council firmly believes that
prevention is the only long-term solution to tackling
ASB
however, where
necessary there are a number of tools available to help us
effectively tackle
ASB
.
Upon receiving a complaint, details of the incident are taken and
the investigating officer will advise you on the various
actions they can take. These can include:
- Where deemed appropriate, provide Incident Diaries to all
the victims/witnesses in order to ascertain up to date
information.
- Advice Letter- Intended to advise the
individual or family that their conduct amounts to anti-social
behaviour and asks then to act is a less troublesome way in the
future. Individuals or families may not be aware their behaviour is
causing concern.
- Warning Letter - Intended to alert the
individual to the impact and consequences of their anti-social
behaviour. Especially if they have already received advice. In the
vast majority of cases the warning letter has been found to be
sufficient in deterring future anti-social behaviour.
- Acceptable Behaviour Contract (ABC) - A
written agreement in which the perpetrator of the anti-social
behaviour agrees to stop such behaviour.
- Anti
-Social
Behaviour Order (ASBO)
- A civil order
prohibiting the offender from carrying out specific behaviours or
from entering specified areas. Usually lasting up to 2 years and if
breached could result in a custodial sentence or a heavy fine.
- Injunction - A civil action preventing an
individual from doing something. Often injunctions are used where
there is a risk of violence.
- Possession - The council have the ability to
evict a council tenant from their home if they continue to engage
in anti-social behaviour.
All complaints received will be treated in
complete confidence.
