Buying a Grave

At Thorpe Road Cemetery in Melton Mowbray, we offer several types of grave. The exclusive right of burial is sold for 100 years. These are known as 'purchased graves'. Grave spaces can be purchased as a way of reserving space in the Council's cemetery. People wishing to make their own arrangements should contact the Superintendent. If you would like to view the cemetery to identify a particular place we are pleased to arrange this. To contact the Cemetery Superintendent please call 01664 562 223.

Ordering a Memorial

Memorials in cemeteries are permitted subject to meeting reasonable conditions. A funeral director should be able to advise on this. A funeral director or Stonemason will need to submit an Application for a memorial to Melton Borough Council with detailed specifications to ensure that the design, materials, inscription and size comply with the Cemetery Regulations. If they comply then a permit will be issued to the stonemason concerned. Application forms are available from the Council Offices.

Monuments

On the lawned sections, a monument may only be erected at the head of the grave. Regretfully, kerbs and other monuments will not be allowed: this is in order to continue the high standards of appearance at the cemetery and keep maintenance costs down. Please contact your local stonemason for advice on the choice of monuments.

Garden of Remembrance and Wall of Remembrance

The Garden of Remembrance is available for the scattering of Cremated Remains. The Wall of Remembrance is also available for the display of bronze memorial plaques, with individually chosen inscriptions, which may be purchased solely through the Council. Vase blocks are also available around the Memorial Garden. Please do not erect or place any other type of memorial within this area, with the exception of flower vases, as it causes inconvenience and distress to others who also have suffered the loss of a loved one.

Flowers and Wreaths

Flowers and wreaths which have deteriorated may be removed and disposed of at the discretion of the Cemetery Superintendent. Christmas wreaths may be removed the following March. Other wreaths may be removed during the course of the grass mowing season where they are likely to impede Cemetery maintenance work.
