Senior's Forum

The Melton Senior's Forum, with support from Melton Borough Council, is made up of a number of residents and agencies that have a common interest in raising awareness of the issues older people face.

Alongside the traditional senior’s month which takes place every September, the forum works hard to plan other activities throughout the year and to highlight important issues for older people in Melton.  Melton Seniors Forum also produces a regular newsletter.

Seniors Forum 2011

During May this year the Seniors Forum and our partners organised events and sessions for celebrating Adult Learners Week and the 10th Anniversary of Silver Surfers day.   There were many different activities planned between the 14th and the 26th May to introduce older people to adult learning opportunities and to the world of technology.  Sessions included ‘spring online’ introductions to the internet and how to use the internet to research people and places.  We hope this encouraged many of you to explore what the internet can do for you.

Seniors Month and Seniors Day 2011

Seniors' Month in Melton was launched by the Mayor of Melton at the Seniors Day event on Friday 2nd September 2011.  The event which was held at the Royal British legion Club in Melton Mowbray and provided people with the chance to find out lots of information and to try new activities.

In addition to information stands from organisations such as Voluntary Action Melton, Age Concern, Care Online, Leicestershire Constabulary, Leicestershire Handyperson Service, Melton Foot Clinic  and Snowdrop Language Services, people also had the chance to try activities such as New Age Kurling and Tea Dancing.  All of the stands offered advice specifally tailored to older people.

Councillor Pat Cumbers, Melton Council's seniors champion and Chair of the Seniors Forum was delighted with the high attendance on the day.

She said: "This is a really important event for the local elderly community. It allows older people to learn, experience and enjoy new things in a comfortable and safe environment, often without having to pay a penny. That's what the day was all about."

Nancy (87) and John Oliver (89) of Gaddesby, who married three years ago after meeting at a seniors' forum dance, said the day had been a great experience.

"It's been lovely here today, we've had a great time. We were here last year and it was a fantastic day then. The food is always good and the day allows the elderly like us to experience new things and get out of the house."
