War Memorial
Close to the
town centre, the War Memorial at Egerton Lodge is set on the
terrace of part of what was a former hunting lodge and Urban
District Council offices, and is now a Residential Nursing
Home.
Adjacent to the A606, the south-facing Memorial, maintained by
the Council, fronts the beautiful Egerton Gardens running down to
the River Eye, which are maintained by Melton Mowbray Town
Estate.
The Memorial comprises stone steps, terrace and an historic wall
on which plaques are mounted. The Memorial is a Listed
Building.
Two Services of Remembrance are held at the Memorial each year
on Battle of Britain Day (September) and Armistice Day
(November).
These services are organised by the Royal Air Force Association
(RAFA) and the Royal British Legion (RBL) respectively and attended
by representatives of ex-servicemen and women's associations, the
Armed Forces, Civic Dignitaries, Elected Members and Officers of
the Melton Borough Council and Melton Mowbray Town Estate,
Emergency Services, Religious and other Community leaders.
Immediately to the east of War Memorial is a wheelchair
accessible dedicated "Field of Remembrance" to allow quiet
reflection for persons wishing to remember those involved in the
two world wars and conflicts since.
Re-dedication is made each year on the Saturday, 14 days before
Remembrance Sunday. This two week period coincides with the annual
Poppy Appeal.
Within the pedestrianised town centre, a memorial plaque to ace
World War II pilot Johnnie Johnson can be found on the Corn Cross
at the junction of Nottingham and High Street. The Corn Cross
also bears a plaque to local World War II hero Dick Burton V.C.
