Car parking charges reviewed
Press Release
13 September 2010
On Wednesday 8th
September Members of Melton Council’s Rural Economic and
Environmental Affairs Committee considered and debated increases to
the car parking tariffs in Council owned car parks in Melton.
The option of increasing
the one hour charge from the existing level of 60p was
rejected. The Council, who were highly commended in the “Most
coach friendly Local Authority” category in the UK Coach Awards,
also rejected the option of charging tourist coaches.
Some changes were made;
the existing tickets that are valid from Monday to Friday and cover
five days will be valid for a full seven days and the weekly charge
will increase from £5 to £7 per week. This is in line with
charges levied by some neighbouring Local Authorities.
Councillor Nigel Angrave,
Chair of the Committee said:
‘We recognise that the
town car parks are an essential service for local trade, movement
of vehicles and also social activities. The parking tariffs
were last changed in May 2008 and were due to be reviewed this
year. Some changes are unavoidable largely due to the increase in
VAT to 20% from January 2011 as car parking fees are subject to
VAT.
We are introducing more
choice for customers by changing the tariffs at Mill Street so that
customers can buy a one hour ticket for 60p, or alternatively, if
they wish to stay for more than one hour there will also be the
option to purchase a long stay ticket ’
