Council BUDGET APPROVED
PRESS RELEASE
6 February 2012
On 1st February, 2012 Melton
Borough Council approved their budget for 2012/13, setting out how
much money they will receive and how much will be available to
spend.
Despite a 13.7% cut in government grant
funding, which is in addition to last year’s cut of 15.8%,
Councillors’ were pleased to have achieved a balanced budget
showing that the Council has lived within its means. This has been
achieved with an overall nil increase in Melton Borough Council’s
share of the Council Tax with some improvements to existing service
levels such as services for the homeless.
This has been achieved by work undertaken
throughout the year to identify efficiency savings that have had a
minimal impact on the services that the public receive. Where
changes have had an impact the Council has referred to the
consultation exercise undertaken in 2010 where residents were asked
which services they were prepared to see reduced in order to save
money.
The Leader of the Council, Byron Rhodes,
said:
“I believe this is a sound budget which
will ensure continuity of services. For the second year running the
Borough Council will not increase the Council Tax.”
