COUNCIL SUCCESSFUL IN WINDFARM
APPEAL
PRESS RELEASE
12th JULY 2010
Melton Borough
Council has successfully resisted plans to build a windfarm close
to Bottesford. Working closely with the resident group
Belvoir Locals Oppose Turbines (BLOT), the case against the
windfarm was presented to a Government Inspector in a 11 day Public
Inquiry held in February, April and May.
The Inspector, Mr Frost,
gave his decision on 8th July and supported the
Council’s and BLOT’s objections. These showed that the windfarm
would harm historic buildings in the area, damage the landscape and
dominate the nearest residents. He went on to say that whilst there
are good reasons to support wind power, the damage they would cause
in this location meant they could not be justified.
The Council estimates the
Inquiry cost them nearly £100,000 and Jim Worley, Head of
Regulatory Services who fought the appeal for the Council
commented: “Naturally we are pleased with the result. By working
with BLOT we were able to produce a successful argument that
persuaded the Inspector. The Council heard from local residents why
the location is wrong and argued this on the community’s behalf.
Public Inquiries are expensive and demanding events but this
Council believed it was essential to play a full role and ensure
residents' views were heard”
