Help Shape the Housing Growth to the North of Melton Mowbray

Press Release

4 November 2011

Melton Borough Council is holding a public exhibition on the 9th November  at the new Council Offices at Parkside, Burton Street, Melton Mowbray of the growth to the north of Melton Mowbray The exhibition is being held between 1700 and 2000.

Melton Borough Council has commissioned Halcrow Ltd to prepare a masterplan for a development ‘sustainable urban extension’ to the north of Melton Mowbray for approximately 1000 new homes and supporting facilities.

The Council is asking for views to help decisions about the scheme, its landscape setting and the location of facilities such as a new school, transport links and open space.

The Masterplan will help the Council develop the Core Strategy which will identify housing, employment and other strategic development together with the investment needed to deliver them. The Core Strategy will be considered later this year before a further round of consultation and submission to an independent Government Inspector.

Councillor Byron Rhodes, Chairman of the Melton Local Development Framework Task Group said:

We need to provide new homes if we are to provide for the future of our community.  This is an important part of our strategy which will help us respond to the Growth agenda and guide investment for the benefit of Melton and our community.  It is only right that we extend an opportunity to comment to the people of Melton.  Under the spirit of Localism I expect the community and their Councillors to maintain a dialogue on issues like this and we look forward to considering the views they share with us. ”

The options plans will be available on the Councils Website and for inspection at Parkside following the exhibition until the 21st December 2011.

Background

In January 2008, Melton Borough Council published the Melton Local Development Framework (MLDF) Core Strategy (Preferred Options). The Core Strategy document sets out the vision, objectives and strategic policies for the Borough to 2026.  Taking into account the houses built since 2006, existing proposals to build houses and the opportunities to re-use previously developed land, we still need to find land for about 1,000 more houses in order to meet our housing requirement.

In November 2009 the Council resolved that the preferred Housing Growth Option is a Sustainable Urban Extension to the north of Melton Mowbray.  This resolution has provided the context for the Council’s work to develop the Core Strategy and deliver housing growth at Melton Mowbray.
