Parking Choices in Melton
Press Release
11 November 2011
Following the ‘Your Money – Have
your Say’ survey that the Council carried out last autumn, the
Council has used the public’s feedback to shape its car parking
service in the Town Centre and offer more choice for car users.
Car parking fees had not been
increased since 2008 and the survey showed that the public’s view
was to keep charges the same. The Council has been able to
retain the status quo for another year but due to the increases in
VAT and inflation, the tariffs will be increased in January 2012
otherwise there would be no money to maintain and improve the car
parking service.
In response to the
public’s comments, the Council will be introducing cost effective
Season Tickets for those who need to park regularly in the Town
Centre and it has not included a Tuesday supplement to the Long
Stay Car Parks. Also the Council reminds the public that
there are 103 free ‘on street’ car parking places within the Town
Centre for 30 or 60 minute trips to the town.
Councillor Joe Orson,
Chair of the Rural, Economic and Environmental Affairs Committee
said:
‘The parking
charges were last increased in May 2008 and had to be reviewed this
year to ensure they were in line with inflation and we were not
making a loss. We took into account what the public said in
the ‘Your Money – Have your Say’ survey and have come up with
compromises that we hope will offer useful choices for those
parking in Melton.
We are committed
to continuing to offer free parking for Blue Badge Holders as well
as free car parking after 10 a.m. for Christmas Shoppers in the
Long Stay Car Parks on the last 5 Fridays before
Christmas.’
