Melton’s young athletes all proved to be the
stars of the show at the 2010 Youth Games held at Loughborough
University on Sunday. Five of Melton’s teams finished in second
place with Girls tag rugby and both yr 5 & 6 and yr 7 & 8
basketball teams being awarded the fair play trophy. In total, 125
of Melton’s young sports people travelled to Loughborough to
compete against the top competitors from all other local
authorities in the county, as well as Leicester City and Rutland,
covering 16 different events.
Kat Plimmer, Melton Borough Council’s Youth
Games coordinator said ‘I am immensely proud of every young person
that represented Melton on Sunday. As usual they competed with the
right attitude and sense of fair play, whilst trying to be
successful. I’m also very thankful to the small army of volunteers
from clubs and schools who help provide young people with the
opportunity to compete, not just on the day but in the weeks and
months leading up to the games. This support including local
partnership development manager, Ineke Ward and Jenny Smith is
crucial to the on going delivery of sport and physical activity in
the Melton Borough.
Cllr. Margaret Moore, who was present on the
day to watch some of Melton’s teams in action, said ‘The event was
fantastic to witness and to be a part of. The young people looked
like they were having a great time, despite the hot weather. My
congratulations go to every young person that represented Melton
for competing in the right spirit, whether winning or losing.
