What is the Electoral Register
WHAT IS THE REGISTER USED FOR?
The full register of electors is used for elections and
referendums. The Jury Service also use it for summoning you to do
jury service. The full Register is also used for credit reference
checking by the credit reference agencies. The register may also be
used for the prevention and detection of crime.
WHAT IS THE ELECTORAL REGISTER?
The Electoral Registration officer is required to produce
annually a Register of all eligable electors. This document is
published each year on or around the 1st December and contains the
names of those residents within the Borough who have registered and
are eligible to vote. If your name is not on the Register of
Electoral you will not be able to vote at any elections.
There are two versions of the Register.
THE FULL REGISTER
The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote and
includes their addresses. Only certain people and organisation can
have copies of the full register, and they can only use it for
specified purposes. The main use of the full register is for
election and referendums, but it can also be used for other
purposes such as the prevention and detection of crime and for
checking your identity when you have applied for credit. Details of
others who can have copies of the full register and whey they can
use it for are given in the Representation of the People (England
and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2002(SI2002 No 1871).
THE EDITED REGISTER
The edited register leaves out the names and addresses of people
who have asked for them to be excluded from that version of the
register. The edited register can be bought by anyone who asks for
a copy and they may use it for any purpose.
