Mayor of the Borough of Melton
On
Thursday 19 May 2011, Councillor Alison Freer was invested as the
Mayor of Melton for 2011/12. The Mayor, Councillor Alison
Freer, the youngest ever to hold the position, says she will take
inspiration from her parents and from children and young people in
the borough during her year in office.
Councillor Freer becomes the Borough's first citizen after
representing Warwick Ward since 2007, has had to make her own way
in life, putting herself through university, running her own
business and bringing up her son Joseph who is now 12.
Looking forward to her year in office she said: “As a youngster
I watched my parents work hard providing for the family, creating
their own careers, this is where I find my strength to work hard
every day, to try to emulate my parents and instil the same values
in my son.”
Today Alison teaches numeracy and literacy at Melton Learning
Hub and it’s her intention to visit as many schools as she can over
the next 12 months. Her charity will be The Romy Children’s Fund
which helps children with complex needs or serious and
life-limiting conditions in the Melton locality.
Alison has said that it is a great honour and a 'once in a
lifetime opportunity' to become first citizen and Mayor of this
lovely market town and will do her utmost to serve the citizens of
the Borough of Melton well.

Mayor's Appeal

The Mayor will Support The Romy Appeal for the Civic Year
2011/12
A small children's charity has the support of the Mayor of the
Borough of Melton.
The Romy Fund - registered with the Charity Commission No
1125541
The Romy Fund grew out of a Melton Times Appeal to send a
little girl, Romaney Fugill, to America for pioneering treatment
for neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer.
Sadly, Romy's condition deteriorated and she was not able to go
for treatment but it was decided to turn the appeal into a
charitable fund to help other children like her.
After a lengthy legal process the Romaney Fugill Memorial Fund
(or Romy Fund for short) was formed and registered with the Charity
Commission and trustees were appointed.
The Romy Fund serves to help children with complex needs,
serious of life-limiting conditions in the Melton locality. It can
also help their families in times of severe hardship.
To date the fund has handed out more than £35,000 to improve the
quality of life of a number of local children. The biggest grant to
date is helping to buy a new minibus for Birch Wood Special School
in Melton.
The fund is a finite resource so we have set up a Friends of
Romy group to raise awareness and to fundraise and we are all
delighted the Mayor has adopted us as her charity of the year. And
thanks to YOUR support many children like Romy will be helped for
many, many years to come.
