Place Survey 2008/2009

The 2008 Place Survey provides information on people's perceptions of their local area and the local services they receive.

The ‘Place Survey’ was carried out across all local authorities in England in the autumn of 2008 as part of new government requirements. The aim of the survey, which replaces the old Best Value Performance Indicator Residents Survey (last carried out in 2006), was to find out how well the different agencies, such as the councils, the police and NHS, are doing in delivering the services that matter to local residents, and whether things could be done differently in the future.

Key questions in the survey include residents’ satisfaction with their area as a place to live and how satisfied they are with the way the council and its partners run things. The survey also covers a range of other questions on topics such as information provision, local decision making and getting involved, respect and consideration, community safety and Anti-Social Behaviour, as well as more detailed questions on satisfaction with certain services, for example, public transport provision, libraries, refuse collection and household waste centres and parks and open spaces.

In Melton, the survey was carried out jointly by Melton Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council on behalf of the Melton Strategic Partnership and Leicestershire Together. In total just over a thousand people living in Melton completed the survey.

The headline results (together with the results for all local authorities nationally) were originally scheduled to me made available by the Audit Commission and the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) in March 2009. However, this timetable was considerably delayed in order to allow the CLG and Audit Commission to complete detailed quality assurance work on the methodology prescribed nationally. This process was required as a result of new government guidance being released on standards for official statistics.

The CLG and Audit Commission are now beginning the process of disseminating the findings. The first release of data gives the results for the 18 Nation Indicators collected by the survey.

Results for the Leicester, Leicestershire county and districts are available on the Leicestershire Statistics and Research Online website.

National NI results from all local authorities across the country are available on the CLG website.

The release date(s) for the remaining results from the survey have not yet been confirmed. As and when more data is released the results will be made available on this site as soon as possible. Once the full data set has been released detailed analysis reports will be made available.
