Lynn Aisbett, Chief Executive of Melton
Borough Council is pleased to announce that Sarah Boyce was duly
elected Young Mayor for 2011/2012 with Katie-Louise Hazard being
elected as Deputy Young Mayor. A total of 1556 votes were
cast, with an overall turnout for the Young Mayor elections of
51.64%.
Voting took place during Local
Democray Week at Brooksby Melton College, John Ferneley, Long
Field, Belvoir High School, Melton Learning Hub, MV16 and
Connexions. The Young Mayor Election count and result
announcement was made at Melton Borough Council's new Parkside
offices on Thursday 13th October 2011. The full breakdown of
results is here.
Cllr. Pam Posnett, lead member for Children
& Young People would like to wish the Young Mayor and the
deputy Young Mayor all the best for the year ahead.
Thank you to everyone who supported and was
part of this process, which hopefully provided many young people
with an insight into local democracy and provided them with a
chance to vote on who will be representing young people in Melton
for the year ahead.
Sarah Boyce will replace Melton’s 2010/11
Young Mayor David Downing, who was an inspirational ambassador for
young people during his year as Young Mayor. David, who was
awarded the Young Champion award at last week’s Melton Times
community awards, will be remembered for his actions which prompted
Melton Borough Council and Active Melton to reintroduce free
swimming for under 17’s during the 2011 Summer holidays.

Sarah's Election Statement
The ideal young mayor would be: hardworking and friendly;
dedicated and approachable; as well as being very very
organised. I am all of this but have also lived outside of
Melton, meaning I know what is available for young people and can
use this to improve what Melton has to offer.
- If I was elected, I would get you involved. I would set up a
facebook page for you. It would include;
- you posting requests onto it (such as 'I want gym membership to
be cheaper for students')
- You supporting posts (if you liked them) as the most popular
posts would be published at council meetings
- Updates on what I have been doing
- My contact details so I can always be available
I would also arrange to go to school council meetings every 3
months to give feedback and listen, making what you want
reality.
I too have some ideas. If I am elected I would create a help
point for young people aimed to help with GCSE's, A-levels,
personal statements, work interviews etc. I would create this
through gathering and organising a variety of different contacts
from teachers, businesses, universities and exam boards.
I will also try to reduce the cost of public transport for young
adults aged between 16 and 19, especially as the costs increase at
the age of 16.
I want to organise an annual youth festival for Melton Mowbray
which would involve local young talent such as bands, dance groups,
music artists and others (e.g. fire poi, juggling/ circus
performances, stand up comedy etc.) This event could be funded
through advertisements, food and drink stands and by other fund
raising means.
I want to listen to what you want
I want to voice what you want
I want to get what you want
I want to be the next young mayor of Melton. Please vote for
me.

Election Statement
I want to take this opportunity to not just talk and complain
about changes needed but to personally amend the systems for the
better, helping young people in life. I want to see melton in
its true colours and develop a closely bound community that is
proud of our young people. I want to see a change in the
numbers of unemployed young people in the borough. I have
personally witnessed many of my friends struggle to find
employment; being told they dont have the right qualifications or
the right work experience. I would like to introduce a self
funded scheme whereby young people have the opportunity to get
vital work experience and qualifications they need, to get on the
road to employment and get those jobs and careers they have dreamed
about. My aspiration is to help young people improve their
life chances by helping them to help themselves and realise their
true potential.
As young mayor i want to give young people the recognition they
deserve and support those that ordinarily would have slipped
through the system. I will also produce a monthly update for
the people in the borough in the Melton Times and the Melton
Messenger. I have the determination and confidence to
introduce these schemes and the communication skills to develop a
network and build strong relationships with local businesses and
people.
