What does being a Young Mayor involve?
- You would represent young people in Melton Borough
- You would voice the interests of young people to the Mayor,
Councillors, and the Community
- You would attends events that interest Melton's young
people
Being the young mayor is a changeling role but you will learn
new skills and have new experiences that you will be able to take
with you into the future. You will have a chance to shine at public
events, and meet a verity of people while in office. The most
important part of the role is making a difference, you will be the
face of all the young people and will have an opportunity
to have a voice on their behalf.

10th – 14th October 2011 and during
this week the voting will take place for your new Young Mayor. If
the job of young mayor is not for you, you can still have an active
role by making sure you decide who gets the job. Voting is held in
local Schools/ Colleges and Connextions and every vote
counts. Make sure you vote during this week.

What is a Young Mayor?
The Young Mayor is a person aged 14 to 19 (or
25 if the young person has specific needs) who is elected by other
young people to represent them. They provide a link between
the Borough Council and Melton Youth Council. The Young Mayor
can be a major influence in promoting the image and importance of
Youth in Melton Mowbray at a local, regional, national and
international level.
What is expected of me as a Young
Mayor?
You will;
· Represent young
people of the Melton Borough.
· Voice the
interests of Melton’s young people to the Mayor, Councillors,
businesses, the wider community and other public service providers
by consultation with the Youth Council.
· Attend events of
interest and importance to Melton’s young people as determined by
the Mayor, appropriate to the role and accompanied by an
appropriate adult.
· Promote equality
by not discriminating against any person and by treating people
with respect, regardless of their race, age, religion, gender,
sexual orientation or disability.
How long is the Young Mayor Elected
for?
The Young Mayor is elected for 1 year; the
term of office runs from October to October each year.
What are the time
commitments?
The Young Mayor should expect to spend on
average one evening a week on the role - but this could include
occasional weekends and/or meetings during the day. School or
college work will always come first.
What support will I receive as a Young
Mayor?
You will receive support from Melton Borough
Council who will assist with your diary arrangements and
Leicestershire County Council and the Youth Council.
Do I get to wear a Chain of
Office?
Yes - the Young Mayor will wear a chain when
engaged on civic business as a symbol of their position.

When does the voting take place?
Voting will take place during Local Democracy Week which runs
from 10th - 14th October 2011. Voting will take place in
local Schools, Colleges and Connexions. The election results
will be announced on the evening of Thursday 13th October.
What happens if I do not get elected as the Young
Mayor? What is a Deputy Young Mayor?
The person with the most votes on election day will be elected
as Melton's Young Mayor. The person who has the second
highest amount of votes will be elected as the Deputy Young
Mayor. As the Deputy Young Mayor you will assist and
accompany the Young Mayor at events and help support the Young
Mayor in raising issues for young people.
What is the Youth Council and how is it
organised?
The Youth Council captures the views of young
people. The target age for the Youth Council is 13 to 18 (Year 9
+). Young people from school councils and other youth groups
and organisations feed into the Youth Council to raise
issues. As the Young Mayor you would be expected to link into
