Scores on the Doors

Background

All catering businesses within the borough, such as cafes, restaurants, schools, rest homes etc are assigned a score based on a risk rating system and given a star rating out of three once they have had a formal food inspection.  Current premises scores are available here

The aim of the scheme is:

  • To provide information about the level of compliance with hygiene legislation to consumers in a way that is clear and easy to understand.
  • To drive up public health standards by encouraging businesses to comply with hygiene legislation

At the present time the scoring system in Melton is a four tier system, allowing anything from zero to four stars to be awarded  (It is anticipated that a national six tier system will be adopted towards the end of 2010.  For up to date information please see the Food Standards Agency website)

   3 Stars

Good - Good level of legal compliance. Only minor safety issues not addressed.

2 Stars

Satisfactory - Mainly compliant with food safety legislation. An understanding of food safety and standards being maintained or being improved

1 Star

Poor - Some non compliance with food safety legislation – more effort required.

No stars

Failing - A general failure to comply with legal requirements. Little or no appreciation of food safety.

How stars are awarded

The number of stars is determined at inspection when the premises will be assessed against three criteria:

·          Food hygiene practices

·          Structure and cleanliness

·          Confidence in management

For each of these three criteria a score is awarded by the inspecting Officer and the total score determines the number of stars.

A certificate is printed showing the number of stars awarded and premises are invited to display this.  Scores are available for all assessed premises on the Foodscores website.
