Pest Control

Rodents, birds and insects can cause damage to
food businesses and contaminate food. A food business
operator is required to design and maintain his premises in such a
way as to ensure effective cleaning and prevent pests getting
in.
Setting up a pest control contract is good
practice, but remember that the ultimate responsibility for any
pest problem lies with the proprietor of the food business.
You should be aware in particular of the
following parts of your premises that can allow rodents and other
pests have easy access:
- Gaps around doors, skirting boards, pipes and cables (even high
off the ground)
- Open doors and windows
- Uncovered drains and dry toilets
- Broken drains
If you can see a gap and can get your pen in
the hole then this is large enough for a mouse to enter!
Remember that effective cleaning is a great
preventative method to stopping pest infestation. Without a
food source pests will not be attracted.
