Food Hygiene Rating Scheme
Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

We have adopted the new national scheme
which replaces the previous Scores on the Doors rating scheme.
This new scheme is a Food Standards Agency/local authority
partnership initiative to provide consumers with at-a-glance
information about hygiene standards in food businesses found during
planned inspections. The aim is to help the public make
informed choices about where they eat out or shop for food.
Having a single scheme in place will help
ensure consistency for businesses both within and across local
authority boundaries.
Current Food Hygiene Rating Scheme scores
for Melton borough premises are available on the national
Food Hygiene Rating Scheme website.
We launched the new scheme in February
2011 with our partner local authorities across Leicestershire
– Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough
Council, Oadby & Wigston Borough Council, Blaby District
Council and North West Leicestershire District Council.
Leicester City Council adopted the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme
during the summer of 2011 and Harborough District Council intend to
adopt the scheme in 2012. The scheme is also used throughout
the UK.
How does the scheme work
?
Food businesses are scored after their
periodic food hygiene inspection carried out by Environmental
Health. The inspector will score the business on a range of
criteria, which then generates an overall score under the scheme.
The new Food Hygiene Rating Scheme consist of 6 tiers; a score of 5
will be the highest level indicating very good standards of food
hygiene and a score of 0 will indicate that urgent improvement is
necessary.
The rating does not reflect the quality of
food nor the standard of service provided to customers.
What do I look
for?
Premises are provided a window sticker showing
their score along with an A4 paper certificate for display.
Scores are also shown on the national
Food Hygiene Rating Scheme website.
Please
note that for premises who score 0-4 the scores are not published
straight away; there will be a delay of up to 28 days to
incorporate the appeals period whereby premises can lodge an appeal
to their result. Scores of 5 will be published as soon as
possible after the inspection.

Notes about the
Scheme
The food hygiene rating scheme is not an
endorsement of current standards but merely reflects the rating
given at the time of their last inspection.
The
Food Standards Agency Rating website is available to
view.
The old Scores on the Doors scheme (which used
stars and was based on a score out of three) has now ended and
businesses must no longer display those certificates as they are
out of date.
