Radon Information Leaflet

Radon is a chemical element with the symbol Rn and atomic number 86.  It is a radioactive, colourless, odourless, tasteless gas which occurs naturally in the environment as the decay product of uranium.  Radon is generally concentrated in ore-bearing rocks scattered around the world.

Radon is often the single largest contributor to an individual’s background radiation dose.

Certain areas of the borough have larger concentrations of Radon gas in the rocks than others.

For details of how Radon can affect humans and how it can get into the home please see the Health Protection Agency website.
