Open and Derelict Properties
Empty dwellings can be an eyesore, dangerous
and attractive to vermin. They are also a waste of an important
local resource whilst families and individuals are waiting for an
affordable home.
The Local Government (Miscellaneous
Provisions) Act 1982 empowers Local Authorities to deal with
privately owned vacant buildings which are not secured against
unauthorised entry or that are likely to become a danger to public
health. At Melton Borough Council the Environmental Health section has this
responsibility and in certain circumstances will serve notice on
open and derelict properties to enable them to be secured, for
example by boarding it up, to ensure that no public health threat
is posed to people in the vicinity.
