Private Water Supplies
The Private Water Supplies Regulations 2009
The Private
Water Supplies Regulations 2009 came into force on the 1st
January 2010 and apply to all private water supplies intended for
human consumption.
This means they apply to
water for domestic purposes (e.g. drinking, cooking, food
preparation and washing) and water used for commercial purposes
that come from supplies other than the public water supply.
These supplies
include:
1. Water from a
well or borehole or spring, which is supplied from someone other
than a Water Undertaker or Licensed water supplier, or;
2. Water supplied
by a Water Undertaker or Licensed water supplier, which is then
further distributed by another person (a “private distribution
network”).
The Regulations require
Melton Borough Council to maintain a register of all known private
water supplies within the borough and the basic details can be
found in the private water supply register.
Additionally the Council
is required to undertake a risk assessment and monitoring on all
supplies other than those that supply a single domestic premise.
The risk assessment will be used to decide on the frequency and
type of monitoring samples taken and may also indicate any
improvements in the supply or it’s distribution that are
required.
Local Authorities can
make reasonable charges, to cover their costs for carrying out
their duties under the Regulations, up to maximum limits set out in
the regulations. For the current charges please contact

The Private
Water Supply register provides basic details of all private
water supplies currently registered with the Council. More detailed
information on each supply may be obtained from Environmental
Health.
