What to do if you have been affected by flooding…

 

If your home has been flooded:

  • Have your gas and electricity supplies and appliances checked by experts before switching them back on;
  • Ventilate your property (less damp means less damage);
  • Contact your insurer or inform your landlord as soon as possible.

Flooding Related Health Issues

  • Run taps for a few minutes before use;
  • DO NOT drink contaminated water. If you think your water supply may have been contaminated then drink bottled water or water that has been boiled;
  • Avoid contact with floodwater;
  • DO NOT eat food that has been contaminated by floodwater, or food that has defrosted due to power failure;
  • If you develop symptoms such as sickness or diarrhoea that may be associated with eating or drinking contaminated items then contact your doctor.

Additional Advice for Businesses

 

Where flood water has entered business premises, an Environmental Health Officer should be contacted on (01664) 502 502, particularly if there is believed to be:

  • A risk to public health;
  • Flooding of a premises serving food;
  • Flooding of a property/premises where Melton Borough Council's Environmental Health department are the enforcing authority.
