A legal requirement of the Health and Safety at Work Act is that all employers ensure that they run their businesses in a manner which is safe for their employees, thier customers and themselves. This includes- providing a smoke-free workplace.

The Health and Safety Executive's role is to protect people against risks which may arise out of work activities. They do this in a number of ways, including research, by providing information and advice, by promoting training, by instigating new or revised regulations and codes of practice, and by inspection, investigation and enforcement. Health and Safety at Work Act

 

The Health and Safety at Work act was passed to make further provision for securing the health, safety and welfare of persons at work, for protecting others against risks to health or safety in connection with the activities of persons at work, for controlling the keeping and use and preventing the unlawful acquisition, possession and use of dangerous substances, and for controlling certain emissions into the atmosphere. Smoke Free Public Places and Workplaces

 

Employers are also required by law to provide a smoke free work place for all thier employees. This also applies to vehicles. It is a criminal offence not to comply with the smoke free law, and anyone who does so may face fixed penality fines or larger fines appointed by the courts.
