Riding Establishment Licence
Stables, which hire out horses or ponies for
riding or instruction, must be licensed under the Riding
Establishments Acts 1964 and 1970. The term riding
establishment is actually defined as the carrying on of a
business of keeping horses to let them out on hire for riding, or
for use in providing instruction in riding for payment, or
both. The place at which the riding establishment is run
is taken as the place at which the horses are kept. A Horse
includes any mare, gelding, pony, foal, colt, filly or stallion and
also any ass, mule or jennet.
Riding Establishment licences are renewable
annually and run from 1st January. Our Officers will arrange
for the inspection of horses and premises by a veterinary surgeon
to ensure the welfare of the animals and that the accommodation is
suitable. The licence will be issued subject to compliance with
licence conditions and payment of the licence fee. We will also
require sight of the
organisation’s Public Liability Insurance policy
document.
The Licensing section and
Environmental Health are responsible for the issuing of
the Licence and for the inspections which ensure that all
conditions attached to the licence or registration are being
met. We investigate complaints including those concerning
premises illegally trading without a licence and we will give
advice and assistance to businesses, especially those seeking a new
licence or registration.
