How to apply for a licence for a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle

We require the following:

• Completed application form
• Payment of the fee (£123)
• For Hackneys only: a valid calibration certificate from N&J Pitts Taximeter Services, Nottingham
• A valid MOT certificate
• The vehicle Registration Certificate (V5 Logbook)
• Valid motor insurance certificate (covering for hire & reward)
• A completed taxi test form from the approved garage 

To obtain the taxi test form the applicant must take the vehicle at their own expense to one of our three approved garages in Melton for the vehicle to undergo a stringent vehicle test. If the vehicle passes the test then the garage will forward the completed vehicle test form to us in order that we may proceed with the application.

Vehicles over the age of 10 years cannot be licensed. In addition all vehicles on first registration must be less than 6 years old on the date of the application for the licence. Vehicles over the age of 8 years must undergo and pass two vehicle tests per year, at six-monthly intervals. Please check our Melton Borough Council Conditions booklet for further criteria.

The maximum number of passengers is 8. You must consider though whether your vehicle can comfortably carry the number you request AND luggage, and be able to justify this.

All Private Hire vehicles are now issued with two door stickers for the vehicle.  These stickers indicate that the vehicle can only be prebooked and cannot be hailed in the street.

All licence applications must be accompanied by the fee. It is not possible to pay on collection.
