Planning
Planning is the way we plan for and make decisions
about the future of the Borough. People have discussed and
debated where development should take place within their community
for thousands of years. Different people have different views
and opinions on the area that they live in and how they would like
it to look in the future. Over the centuries a more formal
way of making these decisions has developed.
The planning system has to balance the different views within
our community. The way we do that is by having a plan that
sets out where development should take place and how its impact
should be judged. When somebody wants to build something now
they usually need planning permission from their local planning
authority; Melton Borough Council. Without a planning system
everbody could build where they wanted regardless of the effect
that this would have on other people who live or work nearby.
As the local planning authority for the area we are
responsible for preparing local
planning policy, determining planning applications and enforcing planning control.
Planning is one part of the
Councils Regulatory Services Team, which includes Development
Control, Building Control, Environmental Health, Planning Enforcement, Licensing
and Conservation. A guide to the work of the
Regulatory Services Team can be downloaded
