melton mowbray town centre masterplan
In February 2007, the Council started
to prepare a Town Centre Masterplan for Melton
Mowbray. The Masterplan identifies the retail, office
and other uses needed to contribute to the regeneration of the Town
Centre and considers the opportunities for locating new
developments. However, the majority of the Masterplan was
prepared prior to the fire which has resulted in the demolition of
the majority of the Council’s Offices and has led to the Council
decision on 4 March 2009 to dispose of the Nottingham Road site for
redevelopment. The Masterplan was so far advanced at the time
of the fire that the availability of the Nottingham Road site and
the potential development of Council Offices at Burton
Street has not influenced the report in its entirety.
Nevetheless, the Masterplan provides a Strategic
Vision for the Town Centre and seven Regeneration Themes which
have been used to develop project
options which have the potential to transform the current
central area into a vibrant, high quality and integrated Town
Centre.
A draft
updated project plan has been prepared. The plan sets out
which projects could be pursued at this time. Where projects
are to be pursued an indication is given of which of the Councils
service areas or partner organisations this
involves. The plan will be reported to committee
on 1 April 2009 and the final version will be made available
here.
The projects can be grouped into
packages of activities. Generally, this results in the
following areas of work that could be focused on to regenerate the
town;
- Pursuit of regeneration opportunities at
principal sites within the town centre; the Cattle
Market, Wilton Road/ Brooksby College, Burton Road
and Nottingham Road.
- Preparation of an Area Action Plan for Melton
Mowbray Town Centre as part of the Melton Local Development
Framework
- Preparation of a comprehensive Public Realm
Strategy
- Preparation of a Green Infrastructure
Strategy
The original
Masterplan document may also be downloaded, although the
project plan should be consulted to see which projects are
currently being pursued.
