Bags for waste

Bags are only issued to particular residents, usually those who do not have level access between their door and the edge of the property.

  • Disposable bags (pink bags or bio bags) are delivered yearly.
  • Pink bags are disposable bags for general (non-recyclable) waste.
  • Bio bags are transparent, disposable bags for garden waste only.
  • Blue reusable bags are for recyclable materials, though they are used differently from the recycling boxes.

Disposable bags

Delivery

Disposable bags are delivered yearly, during March or April. If it has reached the end of April and you think you have been missed form our deliveries, please contact Customer Services

Eligibility

Disposable bags are issued to households where there is an exemption from using the wheeled bins. Existing exemptions have been approved by an officer in our Waste Management team. There are certain other circumstances where pink sacks may be deemed appropriate following a site visit. If you wish to apply for pink sacks, please contact Waste Management via Customer Services

Collection

  • Guidance on what to put in your pink bags is the same as for black bins and guidance for bio bags is the same as for brown bins.
  • Please be particularly careful when disposing of sharp objects such as broken glass in disposable bags. Sharp otherwise harmful objects should be wrapped up in several layers of newspaper or similar material to prevent them from potentially harming somebody who is carrying the bag.
  • When disposable bags are collected by our contractor, official pink bags and bio bags issued by the Council are the only bags that will be collected if not left inside a bin. Any other bags, such as black refuse bags, will not be collected.

Pink bags

Yearly allowance

The allowance for the majority of properties using the bags is 2 rolls of pink bags per year. Since each roll contains 52 bags, 2 rolls per year allows 2 bags of refuse per week, or 4 bags per fortnightly collection. An allowance of 2 rolls of pink bags per year is equivalent in capacity to a collection of one standard black wheeled bin over the same period.

FAQs

I have used all my pink bags. Can I have more?

We make it clear to those that use the pink bags that the yearly allowance should last for a whole year. If you have used all your bags before the next year’s supply is delivered, you will need to contact our Waste Management staff through Customer Services. You may find it helpful to refer to our Waste Minimisation page [link to Waste Minimisation page] for advice on avoiding this situation in future.

I have received my pink bags but they are not sealed properly. What can I do?

In the rare cases that this occurs, it is clearly not the fault of the customer. Contact Customer Services and you will be issued with replacement bags.

Bio bags

Yearly allowance

There is no standard yearly allowance for bio bags, and this depends on the size property and the number that has been requested in the past. Under normal circumstances you will receive the same number of rolls of bio bags from one year to the next. If you feel you are receiving not enough rolls or too many rolls for the year, please contact us.

FAQs

Can I buy bags for my garden waste?

Yes, they cost £1.80 for a roll of 10 and are available by contacting us.

Blue reusable bags

Eligibility

The blue bags are for residents who may find it difficult to accommodate our standard recycling boxes. These are only issued if an officer from our Waste Management team deems them appropriate.

Please bear in mind that if the problem you have is actually getting your recyclable waste to the boudary of your property then an assisted collection of your recycling boxes is likely to be the best solution.

Collection

Blue bags are usually delivered in sets of 4, and you must separate your recyclable waste into 4 different categories. For example if you have bottles and tins mixed together in a blue recycling bag, it will not be collected. This is because the crews can not safely sort materials from the bags in the same way that they can for the boxes.

So in each bag, you should put either:

  • Glass bottles and jars or:
  • Plastic bottles (no other plastics) or:

  • Food tins, drink cans, empty aerosols, clean foil or:

  • Paper, thin card and cardboard (no envelopes)
