Bin day blues?

If you are having problems dealing with your waste, chances are we are having problems too! The steps below should make things easier for you and ensure that your waste is taken on each collection.

  1. Recycle all you can in your recycling boxes.

In a typical black bin in Melton Borough, over a quarter of the space is taken up by waste that could have been recycled in the recycling boxes. Did you know that all these are collected from your recycling boxes?:

    • Plastic bottles
    • Glass bottles & jars
    • Tins & Cans, empty aerosols, clean foil
    • Clean clothes & shoes
    • Paper & Cardboard (in the green box)

Please don’t put plastic wrappings or tubs in your recycling box.

  2. Compost your food.

Kitchen waste makes up almost half the weight of a typical black bin.

    • You can buy special bins for composting food in your own garden by contacting Leicestershire County Council or visiting its web site.
    • If you have a food waste disposal unit in your kitchen sink, you can save food waste in your black bin this way.
    • Remember that brown bins are for garden waste only.

  3. Recycle all you can at a Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), also called a CA site or Council tip.

Around 10% of the waste in a black bin could have been recycled at a HWRC. Sites run by the County Council can be found at:

    • Lake Terrace, Melton Mowbray
    • Normanton Lane, Bottesford
    • Knossington Road, Somerby

You can recycle certain items at these sites that can not be recycled in your recycling boxes. Examples include plastic tubs, electrical items and soil. Further details can be found by contacting Leicestershire County Council or by viewing its web site,

  4. Choose to reduce the waste you produce

There are many ways to reduce the amount of waste you produce and some of them require more effort than others. Here are some examples you may like to try:

    • Cut down on the food you waste. A UK family spends £420 on average each year on food that isn’t eaten. This adds up to over 100 kilos of waste per person. For more information, take a look at the Love Food, Hate Waste campaign.
    • Reduce the number of bags you use by using a bag for life or reusing your carrier bags.
    • Real nappies save money and waste. Contact Leicestershire County Council or visit its web site. Trial and cashback schemes available.
