Additional bins, boxes or bags for waste

If you are struggling to cope with the amount of space you have in your boxes and bins, we advise you first to refer to our waste minimisation page.

Certain households qualify for additional bins, boxes or bags. Below is an explanation of how many of each container a household is allowed to have.

Black bins

All households are entitled to at least one standard black bin assuming there is appropriate storage space or access to the property. To qualify for an additional bin, you must have:

  • 5 or more people living at the property
  • Fewer than 5 people living at the property, but with special requirements for one or more residents. Please contact us if you think this may apply to your household. You may be asked to complete a waste audit, which is a description of the types and amounts of rubbish being produced.

To apply for an additional bin, please complete this form and return to mjones@melton.gov.uk.

Recycling boxes

Households are typically issued with one green recycling box and one grey recycling box. If you are consistently producing more recyclable waste in a week than your box can hold, we will issue an additional recycling box free of charge. In some cases we may require further information to be able to able to issue this additional box.

If you have excess recycling only occasionally, perhaps when guests have visited, you are able to put carrier bags of materials out next to your recycling boxes but only if each bag contains either paper & cardboard or glass bottles & jars or plastic bottles or tins, cans, aerosols, foil. Mixed bags can not be collected.

Brown bins

All households are entitled to at least one standard brown bin assuming there is appropriate storage space or access to the property and the house has a garden. If you have one brown bin, you may request an additional bin by contacting Customer Services. If you already have two bins, we will not be able to issue an extra bin, although you are able to purchase biodegradable bags and place them out for collection next to your brown bin.

Bags

Bags are issued in place of wheeled bins in cases where a Waste Management officer has deemed this necessary.

For extra bags, we have similar requirements to approve delivery as we do for delivery of additional wheeled bins.
