WASTE MINIMISATION

To help you to reduce your waste, the list below shows you what you can do to make a difference

  • Recycle rather than throwing things into your black bin.
  • Reuse items so that fewer new items are needed.
  • Compost your food waste and garden waste in a home composter.
  • Reduce the amount of waste you produce.
  • If you have tried these steps and you are struggling for space in your bins or boxes, you can apply for additional containers.

Recycle

Reuse

Shopping bags

  • Reuse your plastic carrier bags
  • Better still, use a reusable carrier bag for your shopping
  • Some reusable bags are given out for free by shops
  • Your County Council offers more information and a free bag for each household.

Nappies

Hundreds of pounds can be saved by using real nappies (cloth/reusable nappies) rather than disposables. This will also make a significant reduction to the amount of waste being sent to landfill. Real nappies can be used some of the time alongside disposables, depending on what is convenient for each family.

Leicestershire County Council provides more information and operates cashback and lending schemes. Find out more here.

Household items

FreecycleFreeuseit and 2recycle are all online services for donating and receiving usable household items of any size, with no money changing hands. The person who receives an item should expect to collect it.

Reduce

Food Waste

A third of the food we buy ends up in the bin for 4 main reasons:

  • We buy too much;
  • We don't keep an eye on use-by-dates;
  • We cook too much;
  • We throw away our leftovers.

Packaging

  • Think about the items you are buying
  • Think about the shops you are using. Street markets and vegetable box schemes allow you to cut down on packaging, buy more locally produced goods and support local producers.
