Adapting Homes
Decent Homes Standard
Melton Borough Council aims to meet the Decent Homes Standard as
set by the Government by 2010. A Stock Condition Survey was
commissioned in 2002 to ensure that the correct properties were
targetted for improvements, and subsequently an 8 year plan was
developed for Capital expenditure, with tenants consulted on what
changes they would like to see made to their homes. Works carried
out in order to bring homes into line with the governments
standards include replacement kitchens, bathrooms and central
heating, re-roofing, double glazing installations and a variety of
other works.
Disabled Persons Adaptations
The Council will seek to assist tenants with disabilities or
health related problems that affect their access to live in their
homes. This involves working with partners such as Leicestershire
County Council based Occupational therapists who carry out the
initial assessment on requests for adaptations from Melton Borough
Council tenants. The process that a tenant who feels they may be
entitled to such help should go through is as follows,
Step 1 The tenant should contact
the local Social Services office on 01664 564698 to request an
assessment be completed. You will be asked about the difficulties
that you are experiencing and a home visit will be arranged, if
appropriate.
Step 2 Your needs will be assessed
by the Occupational therapist.
Step 3 The Repairs and Improvements
team will be informed in writing of the adaptations required to
your home.
Step 4 The Repairs and Improvements
will assess if it reasonable to adapt your home or if your needs
could be met by a move to a more suitable accommodation. If this is
the case you will be contacted by a housing officer to discuss a
transfer application.
Step 5 If your property is to be
suitable for adaptations then these will be put in hand with a
suitably qualified contractor and completed within an agreed
timetable.
Please note that adaptations are placed on a waiting list and
held in datal order for completion.
