Private water supplies
A private water supply is any water supply which is not provided by water utility company e.g. Severn Trent Water. The private water supply may come from:
- Rivers or streams
- Lakes or ponds
- A private distribution system (mains water privately distributed by a third party who is not a water company)
The private supply may serve one property or several properties through a piped network.
We carry out risk assessments on the supplies that feed more than one property at least every five years and also undertake regular testing of the water to help ensure it remains wholesome.
Individual properties with private supplies
Individual domestic properties on their own exclusive private supply are not part of the regular testing or risk assessments, but can ask us to take water samples for a small fee. If you wish to make use of this service please contact us.
Are you on a private supply?
If you have your own private supply feeding your property, for example from a well or borehole then you must let us know . We are required to report the number of such properties each year to the Drinking Water Inspectorate.
This does not mean, if you are on your own individual supply, we will insist on testing your tap water or require you to have works carried out.
