The Mayor of the Borough of Melton 2023/24– Councillor Alan Hewson

Councillor Alan Hewson is the Mayor for the Melton Borough

Councillor (Cllr) Hewson was born at Scalford Brick Yard House and his family moved to Crossroads Farm, Eastwell when he was 5 years old where he is still living and farming today.

Cllr Hewson attended Scalford Primary School, John Ferneley High School and King Edward VII Upper School.

At the age of 10, he became a member of the Young Farmers’ Club and excelled at stock judging and tug of war.

On leaving school he studied Agriculture and Bookkeeping at Brooksby College where he gained ‘Best Student at Stage 2 Livestock in 1977-78 and Best Farm Management in 1979 and his passion for stock judging was rewarded when he was awarded Stockman of the Year in 1983 a national competition where his judging skills and knowledge in ‘four rings of stock’ were put to the test.

On leaving Brooksby College he joined the family farm at Eastwell helping with the milking of cows and selling homegrown potatoes and eggs.  In 2000 he opened an onsite farm shop for butchery, bakery, homegrown vegetables, potatoes, and a tearoom. In 2014, having moved into dairy, he took their milk and cheese to the Slow Food Festival in Italy.

Cllr Hewson has a strong passion for finding the best way forward for agriculture and his farm is now certified organic with the Soil Association and is part of the Pasture for Life Association which champions the restorative power of grazing animals on pasture.  Cllr Hewson is keen to share the knowledge he has gained during the 10 years of regenerative farming.

Cllr Hewson and his wife, Jane, are also volunteer caseworkers for Farm Community Network,  a voluntary organisation and charity that supports farmers and families within the farming community through difficult times.

Cllr Hewson also manages to find time as an active member of the Eastwell History Group.

Cllr Hewson and his wife Jane have been married for 20 years and between them they have 5 children and 3 grandchildren.  Over the years, Mrs Hewson has fostered children and young people as well as provided respite care with Rushcliffe Borough Council and an Anglican agency.  She also led the first Prison Fellowship Group into Whatton Prison and taught at Sunday and Holiday Clubs for many years.  Mrs Hewson was also Bingham’s first Queen’s Guide.

Cllr Hewson and Mrs Hewson are looking forward to representing the Melton Borough in their coming year of Mayoralty and would like to thank family and friends for their support and encouragement.
