Apply for a scrap metal dealer's licence
There are two types of scrap metal dealer's licences available, depending on your type of business. These licences last for three years:
- Site licences for scrap metal dealers and/or motor salvage operators;
- Collectors’ licences for mobile collectors. These need to be displayed on your vehicle and show that you are properly licensed.
How to apply
Complete the application form and submit this to Environmental Health with your payment of fee. Cheques need to be made payable to Melton Borough Council. If you wish to pay by debit card instead, please use our online payment facility. You will need to make a note of the required fee, below.
You will also need to submit a Basic Disclosure Certificate from Disclosure Scotland. You can apply for it online direct.

Scrap Metal Collector’s Licence: £282
If scrap metal is a by-product of your business you may be exempt from the need to be licensed. Examples of businesses which may be exempt are builders, plumbers and motor vehicle repair garages.
