Apprentices - Council Tax information

If you are undertaking an apprenticeship you may not have to pay Council Tax.

An apprentice is someone employed to learn a trade, business, profession, office, employment or vocation and is undertaking training leading to a recognised qualification, and currently earning less than £195 per week.

When we calculate Council Tax we assume there are two adults living in a property.   If, after disregarding an apprentice, there are still at least two other qualifying adults resident in the property, no discount will apply.

An apprentice will not be counted for Council Tax if they are :

  • employed to learn a trade, business, profession, office, employment or vocation,
  • undertaking training leading to a qualification accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, the National Assembly of Wales or the Scottish Vocational  Education Council, and
  • paid a maximum of £195.00 a week

Apply for a discount

You need to send us:

  • a letter from the college or university stating dates of the course and hours studied.
  • a letter from your employer confirming the apprenticeship
  • wage slips to provide proof of income.
