ARTS SCHEME BOOSTS TOWN

Melton's pioneering Arts and Crafts Trail using vacant shops in the town has been so successful it is to be extended.  Town centre manager Lisa Hammond, said: "The way in which we are uitilising our vacant units is proving very successful.  The aim, of course, is to fill them and we are more than holidng our own.  The national average for vacant units is 12 per cent and predicted to rise to 15 per cent by Christmas.  Our vacant unit rate was 7.6 per cent in September and is now 6.5 per cent.  This equates to 29 vacant units of which only 18 are commercially available, giving an underlying vacant unit rate of four per cent.  The remaining ones are either under offer, undergoing planning or being refurbished".

There are artists currently in three units in the Bell Centre, in Sherrard Street (formerly Harways), Burton Street (formerly Barry's Blinds and Humberts) and in Market Place (formerly Thompsons butchers) and they are now being joined by local artist Natalie Wilkinson and wood-worker Jeffrey Padfield.

More artists and craftspeople are to follow in the coming weeks while Melton Mowbray Art Group will be opening its three-week annual exhibition and sale of work to celebrate its 30th anniversary, in the Bell Centre.

This highly successful scheme finished just before Christmas 2009.
