Seniors Walking Program Set to Spring into Action

Active Together Melton’s new spring/summer seniors walking program will start at the end of March. The sessions, which have proved very popular in the past, are a great way to keep fit and meet new people.

There are two types of walk, each indicated by heart levels. The one heart level walks average between 30 minutes to one hour on good surfaces and fairly flat routes with no stiles. These walks always take place at Melton Country Park and are suitable for newcomers to walking.

The two heart level walks last for up to 90 minutes and cover a variety of paths, which maybe uphill and over stiles. The group meets at Egerton Park at 1.30pm every Thursday to travel to their destination. Paths may be uneven or muddy in places, so appropriate footwear should be worn. Both walks have front and back leaders so all walkers can find their own pace.

Aqua Tai Chi

Aqua Tai Chi is a brand new activity for Melton. It is a blend of the benefits of water fitness and the graceful fluid movements of Tai Chi. Aqua Tai Chi helps improve muscular strength, flexibility, balance, co-ordination and posture. On a psychological level, benefits include increased energy, focus and relaxation.

The classes are particularly suitable for seniors and pregnant women due to the slower, relaxing nature of the session. The water helps to aid buoyancy, thus reducing pressure on the joints.

The Active Together Team in Melton Borough Council, part of Active Melton and Leicester-shire and Rutland Sport, are starting classes on Wednesday 23rd November, 11:15-12:15 in Waterfields Leisure Pool. The sessions will run for 10 weeks and only cost £3.85 per session.

Advanced booking is advised, as the classes are expected to fill up quickly.

Loughborough Half Marathon

SO ARE YOU UP FOR A CHALLENGE – WE NEED YOU!

LWA – Living Without Abuse is organising the Loughborough Half 13 mile race in Loughborough.  The race will start and finish in the Market Place in the historic town of Loughborough, before making its way to the world acclaimed University campus, base for both the Great Britain  and Japanese Olympic teams in 2012.  The route then leave the campus and heads through Thorpe Acre and into the stunning countryside of the private Garendon Park Estate.  Here you will hear the birds tweeting, the rustling of busy wildlife in the hedgerows whilst you are running before heading back into town and to the finish.

This route incorporates the urbanisation of the town, the vitality of the University and finally the outstanding beauty of the local peaceful countryside.

So why not find out more – visit:  http://www.loughboroughhalf.co.uk/

Why not train for this challenge whilst raising vital funds for LWA! Volunteers also required to help marshal the route on the day!

Rotary Club Cycle Challenge.

If you are up for a challenge! Then the East Midlands CiCLE Challenge is for you. Take the 100k or the180k route and Experience the roads that the International CiCLE Classic riders take in April each year. See some of the most beautiful Leicestershire countryside while testing your speed and stamina. The route is fully signed and Marshalled with food and water stations on route. We also have a support team with a cycle doctor for any mishaps that may occur on route with your cycles.

If you would prefer to not have to traverse the 'worst off road' sections it is now possible to take alternative on road routes around these sections which will not involve any unnecessary delays.  We appreciate that riding over very 'off road' terrain on carbon and similar bikes is not to everyone's liking, so in our wish for all riders to enjoy the unique course that we have to offer, the on road sections have been added. The courses will therefore test all participants to the full. So if you require a challenge and a fantastic ride enter now by logging onto www.eastmidlandsciclechallenge.co.uk. And enter NOW. Remember the sportife is not only for you to have a great day but it also raises money for our Local Rotary Charity fund, used for local charities and international disaster funds.

Lead a running class for Save the Children

Save the Children is recruiting a team of leaders to set-up running classes across the UK. This is your chance to give 45 minutes each week for a great cause, whilst developing your fitness, experience and contacts.

"Born to Run" class leaders can be newcomers, or experienced coaches or fitness professionals. For leaders without previous coaching experience, Save the Children is offering subsidies for the "Leadership in Running Fitness" course, in return for your raising funds.

How does it work?

The 45 minute outdoor classes are based on an innovative formula designed by fitness expert Peta Bee, author of London 2012 book "Get Fit for the Games". Classes can take place at any outdoor venue, such as a park, athletics track, football pitch or even the beach. Save the Children will support you with publicity and comprehensive public liability insurance, and link you up with Run England and your local parkrun if appropriate.

Making money

Leaders collect a £2 donation per session from each participant to raise valuable funds to help save children’s lives. Or if you’re looking to earn a small income you could charge an extra pound per participant for yourself.  So if 20 people joined your weekly class, you’d earn £20 for yourself and the charity would benefit by £40.

The cause

Born to Run is part of Save the Children's most ambitious ever campaign – No Child Born to Die – supported by ambassadors such as Samantha Cameron, Natasha Kaplinsky and Simon Cowell, and sporting stars including Jo Pavey and Haile Gebrselassie.

In the world's poorest countries, millions of children are dying. Illnesses such as diarrhoea and pneumonia - dealt with easily at home - are allowed to claim 8 million lives every year. We need to raise awareness, raise money and influence governments to end this tragedy, once and for all. Running is a universal, fun activity that will help us do just that.
