Another Green Flag to Fly

Published Wednesday, 29th July 2015

Melton Borough Council has two special reasons to celebrate the great outdoors, after the Country Park has once again retained its prestigious Green Flag award for the fourth year running.

Thorpe Road Cemetery has also joined Melton Country Park for the first time, which has also been awarded a 2015 Green Flag.

The judging criteria requires winners to provide a green space that is, welcoming, healthy, safe and secure, clean and well maintained. Community involvement and the marketing and management of the space are also taken into consideration, as are sustainability, conservation and heritage factors

The range of available activities and facilities in the Country Park has increased over the past year with more planned for the future. Signage to identify wildlife, flowers and trees will be installed in the park, along with new litter bins. Future plans include a new sports pavilion that will incorporate additional facilities for community use.

Two outstanding features that impressed the judges at Thorpe Road Cemetery where the prominently placed customer feedback boxes as well as the introduction of several  attractive community composting units, for visitors green waste, designed and built by the councils Environmental Services team.

Cllr Pam Posnett said “Our Borough has so much to offer both residents and visitors alike, and a lot of hard work goes into maintaining our parks which provide so many people with so much enjoyment." The Cemetery requires a high level of maintenance and has to be sensitively cared for. This award provides national recognition and motivation for the councils Environmental Services team and volunteers who have helped create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.
