Melton Borough Council and the Market Partners are delighted to welcome Emma McClarkin, European Parliament MEP, to Melton Mowbray Livestock Market.

Emma will be meeting traders and the auctioneers to hear about their plans for the future and also find out about the proposed modernisation and re-development of the livestock building.

The Market remains an important part of the identity of the town today (it was mentioned in the Domesday Book) , the market attracts an estimated 167,000 visitors each year and is considered a vital component in the rural economy within Leicestershire and the wider East Midlands.

Cllr Joe Orson stated

“It is great to have Emma McClarkin here to experience the vibrancy and variety of the market first hand. Our plans for the replacement livestock building are going well, we have drawings in for planning at the moment and our contractors are testing the market for prices.”

Emma McClarkin commented :

“Melton Market has been a great asset to this community and to the region for many years. Its prosperity has a real impact on the local economy. I have come to hear what the market, its buyers and sellers have to say about its future and its development.”

David Willars, Chairman of Melton Mowbray Market said:
“We are delighted to welcome Emma to the market today.  We are passionate about the value of public markets such as ours, providing an efficient, fair and transparent service to all participants and forming a key part of the local economic and social fabric.  We believe the new cattle building and leases will allow us to grow the market further to the benefit of all stakeholders.”

Notes to Editors:

Subject to finance and funding issues and satisfactory planning, the £5.7m programme to include a new state of the art cattle building is on track for contractors to commence construction on site in May 2016.
