Melton Mowbray will be joining in with the lighting of beacons to celebrate The Queen's 90th birthday.

On Thursday, April 21, the Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will light the Principal Beacon to Celebrate her birthday at Windsor Castle.

This will be followed by the lighting of a number of Beacons along the Long Walk, Windsor Great Park, including one at the Copper Horse, and then over 1,000 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK overseas Territories and a Commonwealth Country to celebrate this landmark birthday.

Many different organisations are taking part from all areas of the local community by lighting Beacons, including Town, Parish and Community Councils and Youth Organisations. Beacons will be lit at churches, on farms, country parks, village greens and on country estates. Lighthouses, National Trust and English Heritage properties are also taking part.

Residents are invited to join the National celebrations at one of the three beacon lighting ceremonies in Melton Country Park, Bottesford and Twyford Recreational Ground.

The Mayor of Melton, Cllr Jeanne Douglas and the Melton Division Guides will be lighting the Melton Country Park Beacons at 7.30pm outside the Country Park’s Visitor Centre. There will be children’s activities, including a treasure hunt and Design a Crown workshops from 5.30pm along with refreshments and music prior to the official singing of the National Anthem and the Beacon Lighting Ceremony at 7.30pm.

Cllr Jeanne Douglas, the Mayor of Melton said “I am looking forward to marking Her Majesty The Queen’s milestone birthday by participating in the national lighting of beacons. There is a long tradition in our country of celebrating Royal jubilees, weddings, coronations and special birthdays with the lighting of beacons. I hope that community organisations, families and individuals will all join us on this very special day.”

Cllr Pam Posnett said, “We hope that you can come along and join us in celebrating our Queen’s 90th Birthday at one of the locations in the Borough. We have kept the beacon lighting time at 7.30pm instead of the later time of 8.30pm so all the family can enjoy the celebrations. These events help create a real sense of community spirit, bringing together people young and old”

Bruno Peek, LVO, OBE, OPR, Pageant Master, The Queen’s 90th Birthday Beacons said, “It has been an enormous privilege to be able to organise this amazing community event to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty The Queen.
