Changes to a scheme which offers relief on council tax to some people on low incomes are being considered by Melton Borough Council.

Changes to a scheme which offers relief on council tax to some people on low incomes are being considered by Melton Borough Council.

Proposals have been made to reduce the amount of support people will receive under the Local Council Tax Support scheme. It means people who are currently helped by the scheme could pay more council tax in the future.

The changes are being considered by all councils across Leicestershire as they face continued reductions in Government funding and therefore either need to reduce services or make up shortfalls.

In Melton, people using the Local Council Tax Support scheme receive a maximum of 88 per cent towards their council tax bill. The four options being proposed are to make no change to the current level of support or to reduce the maximum support to 80 per cent; 75 per cent or 70 per cent.

Cllr Leigh Higgins Deputy Leader of Melton Borough Council said: “The Council has adopted an approach which provides co-ordinated support to help people tackle whatever barriers they may face to social, financial and digital independence. In particular we are keen to help customers to move away from relying on Council Tax Support to having their own financial independence.

‘’We wish to support customers who are willing to take steps towards improving their circumstances and become less reliant upon financial support in the future.

“The Council would welcome views from residents, whether they receive Council Tax Support or not, to help shape our new Council Tax Support scheme for 2017/2018”.

The consultation is open from August 4 until September 28, 2016. More details about the proposed changes and ways to have a say can be found at melton.gov.uk/ctsconsultation or consultations.leicester.gov.uk
