Melton’s Big Weekend ! Victorian Christmas 2nd to 4th December 2016Published Wednesday, 16th November 2016
Put the first weekend of December in your diary when Christmas kicks off to a flying start in Melton Mowbray with the biggest weekend of fun-packed entertainment the town has ever seen.
Event organisers have clubbed together to create a co-ordinated event package for maximum impact to encourage residents and visitors to flock to the High Street.
The star attraction on the Friday evening is the first of its kind anywhere in the World! A stunning, spinning Christmas Tree, complete with its very own real life Aerial Angel. The act combines the beauty of ballet, amazing aerial acrobatics and the magic of Christmas in a fully lit, colour-changing LED costume. It will WOW the audiences throughout the evening outside Santa’s Grotto.
Don't miss the opportunity to get your photo taken with a Disney Princess - look out for the magical princesses on the Friday evening or join them for a singalong on Saturday morning at the Stage.
The stage will be host to a huge array of local schools, bands and artists over the three days with over 30 acts in all to entertain shoppers throughout the weekend, including star performances from soprano singers Patricia Hammond, Lily Taylor-Ward & Emily Brown plus some of our local stars including George Simpson, Yolanda Offodile, Matthew Bloomfield and Charlie Russell. New for 2016 are performances from Rock Choir …. Be prepared to rock with a difference!
This Christmas bonanza starts with the Victorian Christmas Lights Switch on event, where the star studded cast of Melton Theatre’s The Wizard of Oz, will switch on the lights with the Mayor of Melton, Cllr David Wright, followed by an awe inspiring firework display and fantastic local talent performing on the stage until 8.00pm.
The main man himself, Santa, will be transported to his new Grotto by Melton’s local Trumpton and will be in residence throughout the whole weekend with a huge sack of Christmas Gifts.
The hugely successful Victorian Christmas Fayre will now be in town for Saturday and Sunday with over 150 stalls clothed in Victorian attire for a truly Dickensian market. Traditional festive gifts, local produce and hand-crafted wares to inspire visitors and residents alike to shop local and support the wealth of specialist businesses and producers home grown to Melton and the surrounding area.
This year there will be some awe inspiring street entertainment including shows from the Snow Queen, Silver Lady and the immensely popular Street Beggars. Queen Victoria will be mingling with the crowds over the full three days with the unique opportunity to join her in a local café for tea and sandwiches!
New for 2016 is Mr Alexander’s Variety Show which is a family vintage show set on a Victorian theatre stage. The show involves magic, juggling, unicycling, balance and illusion and is a colourful eye-catching, crowd-pleasing spectacle all choreographed to vintage jazz.
Thanks to the kind support from the Melton Building Society, we have been able to secure a real eye catcher of an attraction with live Ice Sculpturing over the Saturday and the Sunday outside the Building Society on Nottingham Street.
Don’t forget to also visit St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival, the Sage Cross Festival of Cribs, Victorian Crafts in the library, Melton Carnegie Museum’s craft fair and not one but 3 Christmas Panto’s at Melton Theatre. Late night shopping on the Friday and shops open all day on Sunday.
To complete the weekend, Melton Borough Council has waivered car parking charges and there will be FREE parking in all of the Long Stay car parks over the three days so a perfect opportunity to shop local !
Cllr Pam Posnett, Leader of the Council, said” Melton’s Big weekend will be fantastic for our High Street, encouraging locals and visitors to shop in Melton. Melton Borough Council is proud to work in partnership with the Victorian Christmas Fayre and the Melton BID to create this truly great event which will encourage shoppers to shop local and increase High Street footfall. ”
Ruth Wakeling, Victorian Christmas Fayre Organiser said “This year we have seen a fantastic response from coach companies wanting to visit over the whole weekend with over 12 coaches booked for the Saturday and even 2 coaches for the Friday evening. We need all the support from the local businesses to make this a truly authentic Victorian event and urge shop keepers to get into the spirit and dress their windows and even their staff!2
