New Leader for the CouncilPublished Thursday, 18th May 2017
Councillor Joe Orson has been appointed as the new Leader of Melton Borough Council. The Councillor for Old Dalby Ward was appointed at the Annual Full Council Meeting held on Tuesday 16th May 2017.
Other appointments confirmed at the meeting included Councillor Leigh Higgins who continues as Deputy Leader, Cllr Tejpal Singh Bains who take up the post of Mayor for the year and Cllr Pru Chandler as Deputy Mayor.
Cllr Orson said :
“I am extremely honoured to be invited to lead the Council. We have a huge task ahead with the Local Plan, pressing the case for the by-pass and appointing a new Chief Executive, but also to continue to deliver on our commitment we made in 2015 on projects such as the Cattle Market while we are making excellent progress on the Leisure Vision.
It is vital that we press on with seeking new forms of funding as the Government removes the Central Grant to Councils over the next few years. By being successful here will allow us to grow the Melton economy, support our vulnerable residents while keeping taxes as low as possible and living within our means.”
Cllr Higgins commented :
“I am delighted to be returned as Deputy Leader and look forward to supporting Joe in his vision for the Council. I will continue to work on the commercialisation programmes and lead on delivering the Leisure Vision which is now in a crucial and exciting time during the course of its progress. As Joe has set out, we are united in driving the council to seek new income streams from its assets on behalf of local taxpayers but also to deliver first class facilities at the King Edward site.”
