Melton Market further enhanced to benefit the Town

Following on from the massive c £6m investment to safeguard the future of the Livestock market, plans are being developed to further enhance the market to attract even more visitors to the town.

Melton Borough Council are working closely with partners including the Leicestershire Local Enterprise Partnership and market operators, Gillstream Markets Limited, to enhance and evolve the market as part of Melton’s  unique offer as the Rural Capital of Food.

Part of the evolution will see the long running car boot sale transform into an enhanced Sunday Market starting from 2 December with further plans to expand into a full weekend market in the early 2019. This is to ensure the market has a full offering and better customer experience over the weekend when there are more customers to address.

This year the Victorian Christmas Fair will also include the Market as a venue, along with the opening of the new brewery there, Round Corner Brewing, providing even more reasons for people to visit the town during the festive period. The Friday Farmers’ Market has been here for many years and discussions are progressing with traders to provide a sustainable future for the Friday market and support food businesses and their customers during the busy Christmas period so they can purchase some great produce.

Hugh Brown, CEO of Gillstream Markets said: “We are very excited about the next phase of development at the Market.  With the opening of the Brewery, our participation alongside the Victorian Christmas Fair and the development of a weekend market, we will be providing more reasons for people to visit the Market and the wider area, both during the day and increasingly in the night-time economy, building on our existing evening events business.  We are also developing plans alongside the Council, LLEP and other partners to further enhance this side of the Market and look forward to announcing more as this progresses.”

Councillor Mal Sheldon said. It is great to see new initiatives coming forward on this key town centre site which has seen recent investment to further support the whole of the Town centre.  I think these positive changes are complementary giving people all the more reason to come to Melton Mowbray.
