Melton's Victorian Christmas weekend

Published Tuesday, 20th November 2018 Victorian market

Put the first weekend of December in your diary when Christmas kicks off to a flying start in Melton Mowbray with the Victorian Christmas Weekend.

The stage in the Market Place will host a huge array of local schools, bands and artists over three days to entertain shoppers and visitors throughout the weekend.

Councillor Joe Orson, Leader of the Council, said  ”Melton’s Victorian Christmas Market weekend is a fantastic annual event for our town centre which encourages locals and visitors to shop in Melton town centre and we have a great Christmas Lights Switch On event on the Friday to kick off the big weekend. Melton Borough Council is proud to work in partnership with the Victorian Christmas Fayre, the Melton BID, Melton Mowbray Town Estate and sponsors Melton Building Society and Samworth Brothers, to create this truly great event to promote Melton and boost the local economy.”

The Victorian Christmas Market will be held over the Friday 30th November, Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December with over 150 stalls and their stallholders clothed in Victorian attire for a truly Dickensian market.

Traditional festive gifts, local produce and hand-crafted wares will be on sale to encourage visitors and residents alike to shop local and support the wealth of specialist businesses and producers home grown to Melton and the surrounding area.

This Christmas bonanza starts with the Christmas Lights Switch On event on the Friday, where the star-studded cast of Melton Theatre’s Aladdin, including Ricky Groves, Stuart Earp and Lucy Rollason will switch on the lights with the Mayor of Melton, Councillor Pru Chandler. The Christmas lights are funded by Melton Borough Council each year and make a fantastic festive addition to the town. The light switch on is followed by a firework display and there is a wide range of local talent performing on the stage until 7.30pm.

Santa will be transported to his Grotto through the town centre at 4pm, by Melton’s local Trumpton and will be in residence throughout the whole weekend with a huge sack of Christmas gifts.

Melton Livestock Market will also be holding a Christmas Fair on Saturday 1st December and launching the opening of the Round Corner Brewery, with free brewery tours available throughout the day.

FREE parking will be available in all of the Melton Borough Council Long Stay car parks over the three days so a perfect opportunity to shop local, with late night shopping on the Friday and all day shopping on the Sunday!

Sharon Astill, Victorian Christmas Fayre Organiser said “I am delighted that the event continues to grow year, both in terms of visitor numbers and stallholders. This year we will have coaches arriving from Leeds, Norfolk and further afield, as well as a number of talented crafters travelling a considerable distance to bring their art to Melton Mowbray. We also have a fantastic selection of local talent offering handcrafted wooden, glass, painted and sewn items, as well as several up and coming local food producers”.

Shelagh Core, Manager of the Melton BID said “We’re really looking forward to another successful Victorian Christmas Weekend. The BID will again be sponsoring Best Dressed Window, so we’re encouraging all businesses to get involved and create a truly authentic Victorian Town for the weekend”.
