Melton Borough Council joins other councils in a Midlands trade corridor partnershipPublished Tuesday, 28th May 2019
Melton Borough Council has agreed to join a partnership between all of the councils on the route of the A46 & A15 (from Tewkesbury to Hull) to maximise the local benefits that its improvement will provide.
The entire route is the subject of proposals for improvement, including a new expressway south and east of Leicester, which would bring it closer to Melton. ‘Midlands Connect’ , who recommend transport projects for investment by the Government, have invited affected areas to join together to form a plan for the areas crossed by the A46 to come together to show how the potential of its improvement can create a major boost for economic growth along its whole route. Melton is not directly on the line of the improved A46, but the Council recognise its new route south of Leicester will vastly improve Melton’s attractiveness to investors by linking the area to the national major road network.
Cllr Leigh Higgins, Melton’s portfolio holder for Growth and Prosperity said:“This would be a wide ranging partnership including representatives right across the Midlands that would benefit from an improved A46. By working together we can show the Government that this project would create huge economic advantage all along its route which crosses a large part of the country, and help to persuade them this is a prime contender for large scale investment. Melton has suffered from poor transport links but the A46 Corridor would provide ready access to the national road network and improve our prospects as a place to invest.”
