Melton gets ready to light up

Published Thursday, 24th October 2019

Melton Borough Council have secured a new contractor and lighting scheme for the town centre Christmas lights and the outside of their Burton Street Offices, Parkside.

The new lights at Parkside enable the Council to light up the building in a variety of colours to show support for special days and events.  The lights turn red on Friday 25 October to show support for the British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Councillor Joe Orson, Leader of the Council  said

‘I am delighted that we will have new lights both at Parkside and for the festive period in the town centre. The new lighting features are LED so they reduce our energy costs as well as being environmentally friendly in line with our recently declared climate emergency.  The town centre lights will create a festive look and feel to the town which we hope will encourage people to shop locally as well as attracting visitors to see what Melton has to offer.”

The Christmas festivities will begin on 29 November 2019 in the town centre. The Council have worked in collaboration with the Melton BID to ensure a jam packed entertainment schedule for the switch on event.

Entertainment starts at 9:00am with local live performances from schools, choirs, bands and local artists. Santa's Grotto will run from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.

The festive atmosphere will continue with street entertainment, late night shopping, and a firework spectacular. Light switch on at 6:45pm with the Mayor, Senior Town Warden and the cast from Melton Theatre's Christmas Pantomime.

The Christmas lights switch on is a key offer within the various festivities being held over the Victorian Christmas Fayre weekend.

Free car parking will be available in the long stay car parks at Burton Street, Scalford Road and Mill Street on Friday 29 November and Saturday 30 November.
