Melton prepares for Christmas time: works due to start on renovating the Christmas tree pitPublished Tuesday, 6th October 2020
Melton Borough Council are set to construct a new, improved Christmas tree pit in the town centre.
The construction works are due to start in the Market Place on Thursday 15 October and should be completed by Friday 30 October.
Cllr Leigh Higgins, Deputy Leader of the Council said “This is an exciting and vital project for the town. Christmas is an important time of year for many children and families within our community. We recognise that many residents have made sacrifices this year and we want to ensure that our investment is an inviting and warm tribute to the brilliant community spirit that businesses and residents of Melton have displayed over the year.
Although we understand that this will cause some disruption in the town centre, we are aiming to keep this to a minimum. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, there will be no loud groundwork taking place and no work is to be carried out on Sundays.
As part of our new Corporate Strategy we want to ensure Melton is an area where the community comes first, a place to that invites people to live, work, visit and invest in. This short project will allow new, secure infrastructure to be put in place that will last for years to come. This work, coupled with our work on the Christmas lights, will ensure that our community can continue to have fantastic and inviting festive celebrations within the town centre, becoming a Christmas destination of choice that attracts visitors and boosts our local economy.
During the preparations of this work, we have been in contact with our partners and we really appreciate the support and efforts of the local businesses at this time, as well as the understanding of the community.”
Jeakins Weir is due to carry out the work in the Market Place which will later accommodate a Christmas tree. The building contractor will also ensure good paving is maintained around the pit area in the town centre.
The construction work will take place between the hours of 7.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday with occasional works taking place between 8:00am and 1:00pm on Saturday, if necessary, and there will be no works on Sundays. This may result in increased traffic and a manageable degree of noise generated by the works during the two week period.
Once the new infrastructure is completed, preparations will begin to install a Christmas tree into the new site, ready for some, smaller than usual, festive celebrations to take place within the town during December.
